This course is intended to provide the student with basic information about the history of Latin writing – as a complex system of signs, continuously changing through the centuries – from its origins 7th century B. A fundamental part of the course consists in learning bjschoff analyse any given written source from the palaeographical point of view, which means to be able to read, date and sometimes localize it.


The examples of writing that will be examined are taken from codices, documents, wooden tablets and inscriptions throughout the whole time span considered. It is suggested, though not compulsory, to have a basic knowledge of the Latin language and of Ancient and Medieval history.

In addition to one of the above mentioned handbooks: For the same reason, it is strongly suggested to take advantage of the palaeographic web site of the University of Cassino: During the course, the second hour of each lecture is devoted to reading and commenting few palaeographical plates, referring to the subject discussed in the first hour.

Each student will be asked to read and recognize the main features of a given script.

Each two-hour lecture is organized in two parts, roughly corresponding to an hour: The second part will be based on reading and commenting on palaeographical plates which visually illustrate the content of the theoretical part. Besides the lectures, it may be possible to organize visits to one of the cultural institutions Libraries and Archives existing in Venice.
