Mar 06, Cristina rated it really liked it. Rodoreda is at her best when describing little, everyday things The story isn’t very original -a wealthy family before the Spanish Civil War, their lives, loves, betrayals and eventual decline. Some passages reminded me a bit of james’The turn of the screw – more or less abandoned children playing horrible games in roeoreda garden.
The ghost episode in the end was much less succesful, but the rest more than makes up for it. Strange that this novel was never translated into English -the Dutch translation is very readable. I read this book for the Book Club at the International Institute and had to special order it.
By the time it came in, I had only 6 days to read it. It is a complicated story, easy to get lost in the generations, compounded by mothers who name their daughters after themselves, lots of god children, incest, etc. I think if I had read it slowly, I would have been able to better appreciate it.

This is a book sspejo reading Woven together in fragments, the chapters of this Spanish family saga can almost stand alone as mini-stories.
Rodoreda’s prose can be straightforward and it can also be a whirling dervish of sensation and propulsion.
The perspective shifts often, so that central characters are depicted both from within and as observed. The most startling–and haunting–segments are those concerning siblings Maria and Ramon, and the degree to which their bond has tragic effects.
If only I could read this in the original Catalan The translation-or my edition-had rough spots of added articles, repeated words that I felt were typos, etc otherwise beautiful language, characters, setting This only loses a star because I suspect some of its sheer beauty was lost in translation Crec que hauria de posar-li 5 estrelletes.
Sorprenentment no l’havia llegit, i m’ha atrapat des del primer moment. Exploring the intricacies and calamities of family, with secrets unfolding like rosebuds. It was almost as good as that sounds.
